Choosing the right service

What’s the difference between forestry mulching and land clearing?

Mulching runs one machine that grinds everything where it stands and leaves the chips down as ground cover. Nothing gets hauled, nothing gets burned, and the root mass stays put. Land clearing pulls the roots out and leaves bare soil plus material to deal with. Simple version: mulch if you want the land usable and maintained, clear and grub if you’re putting a foundation on it.

Will mulching kill my palmettos for good?

No, and anyone who tells you it’ll is setting you up for a second invoice. Saw palmetto regrows from the root mass and mulching leaves that intact. For most properties that’s fine. You’ll want a maintenance pass every two to four years. If you need them gone permanently, that’s a grubbing job and we’ll quote it as one.

Can you clear around trees I want to keep?

Yes, and it’s common. Mark them or point them out and we’ll work around them. A tracked loader can cut within about a foot of a trunk without marking it. Tell us before we start rather than after.

Do I need clearing or just brush cutting?

If you want it walkable and tidy for now and you’ll maintain it, brush cutting is cheaper and faster. If you want the density knocked back for a few years, mulching. If you’re building, clearing. Send photos and we’ll tell you which one the property actually needs, including when it’s the cheapest one.

Cost and quoting

How much does it cost to clear an acre in Central Florida?

Light brush and palmetto runs $1,200 to $2,500 an acre mulched. Moderate mixed growth is $2,500 to $3,500. Heavy oak hammock with trunks up to 8 inches runs $3,500 to $4,500. Full clearing down to bare soil is roughly double. Density matters far more than total acreage. The pricing page has the full tables and three worked examples.

Why won’t you give me one number instead of a range?

Before we’ve seen the property, a single number would be a guess dressed up as a quote. Once you’ve sent photos the range we give you is tight. Usually a few hundred dollars wide. The wide ranges on the pricing page exist because the difference between palmetto and oak hammock is that big.

Do you need to walk the property before quoting?

Not to give you a number. Photos of the corners, the thickest part and your access point, plus rough acreage, are enough for a firm range the same day. But Dewey walks the property with you whenever he can, and he’d rather. Two reasons. Photos don’t show everything, and a hidden waterway or a soft corner changes the job. And plenty of people aren’t certain yet what they actually want done. Standing on the ground talking it through, he can see what you’re picturing and tell you what it takes to get there.

Do you charge for quotes or require a deposit?

Quotes and walkthroughs are free, always. Deposits depend on the job. Depends on the job. Mulching and site work, no deposit at all. Anything where we’re hauling material in, shell, base, millings, fill or timber, there’s a deposit and it covers the material. On a driveway that’s usually half. We’re not holding your money, we’re buying your rock before we bring it out.

Scheduling and the work itself

How soon can you get out here?

Scheduling generally runs one to three weeks depending on the season, and most residential jobs take one to three days once we’re on site. Storm cleanup jumps the line. If you’re working to a closing date or an inspection, say so when you ask and we’ll tell you straight whether we can hit it.

What happens to all the material?

With mulching, it stays on site as a chip layer. That’s the whole point of it. With clearing, it has to go somewhere, and that’s a real line item we’ll state either way on the quote rather than leave ambiguous.

Will you tear up my yard getting to the back?

Tracked machines spread their weight and do far less damage than wheels, but on soft ground in wet season anything leaves marks. We’ll tell you honestly what the access route will look like afterwards before we drive down it, and if it’s going to be bad we’ll suggest waiting for drier ground.

Do I need to be there while you work?

No. Plenty of our work is for owners who live out of state. We’ll send photos as we go and walk it with you afterwards, in person or over the phone.

Practical and legal

Do I need a permit?

Possibly, depending on your county and whether the parcel is developed. Permitting is the property owner’s responsibility and we don’t file on your behalf, but we’re happy to point you at the right county office before you commit to anything.

Are you insured?

Yes. $2M general liability with a land clearing rider. We’ll send a certificate to you, your builder or your agent on request, without being chased for it.

What don’t you do?

We’re a clearing and dirt outfit, not a general contractor. We don’t install septic systems, we don’t tie into municipal water, sewer or storm mains, and we don’t do structural demolition or concrete work. Drainage we handle is on your own property. If a job needs something outside that, we’ll say so up front rather than find out halfway through.

Do you work for builders and contractors?

Yes. Pads, clearing and lot prep for builders is steady work. We can provide a certificate of insurance, hold a schedule, and price multiple lots as a package.
